If you're more of a TV/movie buff than a comic enthusiast, especially in the case of Captain America, I'll advise you not to read this, unless you're up for some major spoilers considering most of their movies are based on major events from the comics.
Let's get to it!
Now, if you've been keeping up to date with the Cap, you'll know the poor man has been through hell and back these past few years, this includes dying by the hands of his girlfriend (after being arrested for starting a Civil War), being brought back (after being taken over by Hydra), giving away the Cap. America mantle and shield, growing old and grey and then finally having his youth restored. YIKES!
It's been the most psychotic ride if you ask me, especially considering the amount of new titles I had to keep up with. Happy to say that I've survived through all of this BUT what I don't think I'll live through is the most recent event in Cap's universe.
Now if any of that was a major spoiler for you, either exit now or brace yourselves because this is the biggest one so far (at least for me):
Captain America is and always was.... a HYDRA DOUBLE AGENT!
No, you didn't read that wrong. No, you aren't hallucinating. It's exactly as you read it. Our respectable and always honorable Captain Steve Rogers, is on the side of the fascist neo-nazi organisation, Hydra! This was revealed in the very first issue of 'Captain America: Steve Rogers'.
Now that's what I call a MAJOR SHOCKER. If you don't believe me, take a look:

That is real and if you still don't believe me, go buy it and see for yourself!
When I read that page, I did a double take and actually read the entire comic over and over again about 5 times and against my best wishes, it made no difference at all :'( and that is one thing I simply couldn't deal with. I hit up the internet immediately trying to make sense of it and things were made even worse.
“This is not a clone, not an impostor, not mind control, not someone else acting through Steve. This really is Steve Rogers, Captain America himself,” Marvel writer Nick Spencer told Entertainment Weekly. What made it even worse was the fact that Stan Lee was all for it! He thought the plot twist was original and said that he would've never thought of it and though he believed it to be crazy, he also saw it as being a good idea.
Now, originally, I was on the side of most Marvel and Cap fans and was completely against the idea but I wasn't up for going as far as sending death threats to Nick Spencer like some of them. Apparently there's even a petition to “get Marvel to stop Hydra Captain America” and it now stands at 10,000 signatures last time I checked.
At first I had the exact same thoughts as all of these fans: Captain America's legacy is now at 75 years and to do this to him would be dishonoring everything he has stood for all these years and that doing this to such a beloved character at this point in time was wrong. Plain and Simple. However, as time went on and I began to think about this some more, my opinions shifted.
I now think that the story will be amazing. We're so used to the amazing Captain America. He's literally the embodiment of perfect. His morals have always been so unquestionably good and though I love that about him, sometimes you have to hate him for it. Moreover, think about how amazing it will be. The transition, I mean. Watching someone who has been so pure become so evil. It's unthinkable and to be honest I still think it's impossible but it will be interesting to see how the writers go about bringing forth such a drastic change to the character's personality- a personality that's basically been engraved in our heads for 75 years worth of comics.
Now, I must mention that according to the first issue, Cap. was supposedly recruited through his mom when he was very young. Considering how naive and easily persuaded children are, and how bad his lifestyle was, it isn't that surprising that he would go down the wrong path. THAT is exactly one of the things that is baffling to me. Even though it seems as though he was with Hydra from early youth, he never displayed their values as a grown adult so he must've "seen the light". Right? Right??!
He always was the first to spout his 'we have to do what's right' spiel. PLUS we've seen him go to battle with Hydra countless times so it'll be interesting to see how they justify everything Cap. has been through. Honestly, to me, I think that even if you are the most loyal of agents (or double agents), I can't see anyone going as far as Cap 'SUPPOSEDLY' did for anything. Even if it is true and he was originally a Hydra agent, after all he's been through with the 'good guys' (who are his closest friends btw) how could he have not questioned his loyalty to Hydra or even switched to the good side permanently?
Lastly, I will infer that his initial change of sides could be due to a change of direction resulting from an apparent 'involuntary' change of leadership during Hydra's early stages. However, the original head of Hydra is back and ready to take control again which may explain why the Cap. decided to show his true colours after all this time.
Hopefully, we'll be able to make sense of all this later on in the series. I will definitely be keeping up with this story and if anything really really big happens, I might just write about it.
Signing off now! Hail Hydra...?
